Braintree’s US merchant accounts will bundle Visa, Mastercard, Discover, JCB, and sometimes American Express as the default accepted payment types. Most of our international merchant accounts will bundle Visa and Mastercard as the default accepted payment types. American Express isn't always a default, but it can be added; you’ll need to indicate your interest on your application.
When processing payments online, credit and debit cards are handled the same, as long as they are issued by a major card brand. Because PINs cannot be accepted online, debit cards will always be run as credit.
Most Braintree accounts can also accept PayPal. For more information, check out our PayPal support article.
Prepaid cards may process successfully for one-time transactions; however, Braintree doesn’t encourage merchants to store prepaid cards in the Vault. It's hard to ensure that a prepaid card will have enough funds on it to cover future transactions. While Braintree will not block prepaid card transactions, you may experience higher processor decline rates when accepting this payment method.
Credit and debit cards issued for specific purchases—like HSAs and FSAs or P-Cards—can only be accepted if your merchant account has a specific MCC (Merchant Category Code). If you aren’t sure what your MCC is, contact our Support team for assistance.
Customers on iOS and Android devices can make purchases by connecting their Venmo wallet to your mobile app. Paying with Venmo is currently available in a limited release to select merchants — see our Venmo support article for more information.
