Braintree offers a variety of products that make it easy for you to accept payments in your app or website. Imagine us as the credit card terminal you swipe your card through at the grocery store. We’ll make sure your customer’s payment information gets to the right places and doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

What you’ll need

Business bank account

It’s up to you to decide which institution you use for your business’s bank account. We’ll deposit your funds into this account automatically.

Merchant account

A merchant account is not a bank account—it's what we use to route funds from your customers’ accounts to your bank account. A merchant account is similar to a line of credit, so you’ll need to fill out an application for one.

Braintree provides you with a merchant account as a part of the Braintree Direct setup. If you already have your own, it’s possible that you can continue to use it with Braintree’s gateway. If you are interested in a gateway-only integration, contact us for more details.

Typically, you'll need to wait until your application is approved to begin accepting payments from customers. However, depending on where you sign up, you may get a provisional merchant account that allows you to accept payments up to a certain limit before we review your application. If this applies to you, you'll receive an email explaining the details after you sign up.

Payment gateway

Braintree’s payment gateway will connect you to all of the banking institutions and payment processors that you need in order to collect money from your customers. You’ll give the payment information to Braintree, and we’ll let you know if the transaction was approved by the bank.

Once you integrate with Braintree Direct, we will act as both your merchant account provider and payment gateway – effectively checking these two important requirements off your list. We ease the burden of PCI compliance by giving you different options for securely passing sensitive data through these channels.

While we obviously recommend using Braintree Direct, you can just use our gateway with your own merchant account if you’d prefer. To find out more about gateway-only pricing, contact our Sales team. Keep in mind that if you use another merchant account provider, they will have fees associated with their services on top of Braintree's fees.

How to connect

You’ll interact with Braintree in two ways: 1) through the Control Panel and 2) through the API. The Control Panel is an interface where you can manually set up recurring billing, manage transactions, pull reports, and more. The API (Application Programming Interface) is essentially a bunch of code that you can easily integrate with the existing code on your website in order to automate processes like creating transactions.
